I always get questions about what sevice professionals can do to get paid higher fees. In this economy, people will pay you if you really have something to offer. Something they can't get anywhere else.
The simple answer about how to do that is this: be better at what you do than other people in your field.
Any time you look at your client with that "deer in the headlights" look, you lose credibility. And you've probably not even said a word! But it's obvious you don't know, and that takes away from your status as an expert.
Learn more about your field. You should be on top of every change and addition in your field. All the time. If there are new technologies or concepts, be an early adopter. If you are a hair stylist, stay on top of the top designers. If you're a web designer, know the newest technologies.
Learn more about THEIR field. Look for prospective problems that they will need to solve so that you can have the answer before they even have time to think about it. If you're an accountant and new laws go into affect that will be a problem for your clients, find the loopholes. Know everything about the new issue so you can speak definitively about it.
investigate more about what other experts are doing. Spend time thinking about their methods. See if you can impove on them. Think about why they do what they do. If you don't agree with it, find another solution. Be ready to tell your client that you know what the other guy is doing and tell him why you don't agree with it, and what you do instead.
Try more things. Be an innovator, not an imitator. The man who invented sevice contracts for things like air conditioning was a genius.
Pay more attention to your clients than you do now. Listen to what they say. Don't slough it off. Think about their concerns and find good solutions to their problems.
See what other people are doing in industries similar to yours. Find things that you can adapt to your service business.
If you are their expert, they'll pay you whatever you want, because they will understand your value. You will be indespensible.
