I had a session with a client which reminded me that just because I have the rate determinator on my site, it doesn't mean that service professionals 1) know how to use it and 2) are willing to stick to their rates rather than taking discounts to get a customer.
It really bothers me that any of my clients believe that they need to take rate cuts if somebody asks. None of my clients are mediocre. They are all very bright people who know their stuff, yet they let a potential client make them believe that they aren't worth the money, because, after all, isn't that what the potential client is saying when they ask you to cut your rates? They don't do that to their attorney, or even to their plumber!
I'm not saying that you shouldn't run a special every now and then, but it should be when YOU decide to do it, not when someone else, who came to you because he needs you, decides that you will.
